The Zenith-Rolex collaboration started with the launch of the Rolex Daytona and reference 16520 in 1988 with the calibre 4030 and ended at the millennium with the launch of the first in-house calibre Rolex 4130 in reference 116500. For the first time, Rolex’s chronograph was available with a high-quality automatic movement, making it much more attractive to many wearers. Thanks in large part to the movement’s high technical standards, Rolex Daytonas .
The heart of the Daytona 16520 is its movement, the Rolex Caliber 4030, based on Zenith's El Primero. This movement was a significant advancement, ushering in an era of automatic Daytonas. It features a 52-hour power reserve and is revered for its precision and reliability. The ensuing partnership culminated in a ten-year contract inked in 1984, tasking Zenith with the production of El Primero movements for Rolex. Naturally, without the foresight and audacity of Charles Vermot, this grand deal would’ve been a pipe dream. While the Tudor Big Block featured a modified Valjoux base calibre, Rolex’s new Daytona was powered by a heavily modified Zenith El Primero movement, the Calibre 400, which formed the basis for the new Rolex 4030 movement.
After years of happy collaboration, the relationship between Rolex and Zenith ended in 2000, with the launch of Rolex’s first in-house chronograph movement. Made for the latest Daytona, the Calibre 4130 was very similar to the El-Primero based Rolex Calibre 4030, in its basic architecture and functionality, but it was 100% made by Rolex.Throughout its life, the Rolex Daytona has had three generations of movements – the manual-wind Valjoux calibers, followed by two automatic movements: one based on the Zenith El Primero, and most recently, one that is entirely of Rolex’s own design: the Cal. 4130.
